U12 and U10 Training 12/22 - 12/30

Hello U12 and U10 Families,

I hope this email finds you well and enjoying the week! I can't believe we are already heading into winter break at the end of this week!  Below you will find training info for the upcoming weekend, plus the days we will train over winter break.  Keep in mind that if you can't be here every day over winter break, it isn't a big deal!  I know that there are family holiday commitments, work, etc, so just do what works best for your family.

Training Info for 12/22+23 plus winter break: During this window we will be training according to our regular time schedule unless you hear otherwise from me.

12/22 and 12/23: SL and Skills Quest.  We will begin to introduce stubbies for U10 and U12s who are ready and/or racing in the End of the Year Open.  Therefore athletes can wear shin guards if they have them (isn't necessary especially for U10s).

12/24 and 12/25: OFF Merry Christmas!

12/26-12/29: SL and Skills Quest training.  U12s will be introduced to some tall gates, so in addition to shin guards, they should have their chin and pole guards on too.  U10s will only ski stubbies and skills.

12/30: End of the Year Open (see below for info on how to register.  I will send details for the day next week) OR SL skis for Skills work (no armor necessary if not racing).

12/31-1/3 OFF; Friday Training resumes on 1/4.

Other important info:

Friday training: Anyone who has signed their children up for Friday training (you must sign up for the "3 day" option with the Comp Center) will receive separate communication on this each week ONLY IF you have completed registration for this. I usually send it some time after my regular weekly email.

End of the Year Open: There is an open race for U14 and U12s at Okemo on December 30th. NEW this year this race is a SL - for U12s it will be stubby SL.  Registration is NOW OPEN here: https://adminskiracing.com/node/181744 This race fills fast - sign up NOW!   Your child must be current with USSS and VARA to enter. Please be aware that if your child is still a U10 (7, 8, or 9 years old by Dec 31) they are not eligible. I also ask that you do not register your child if they are new to U12s (as in just moving up from Hopefuls or joining the program) - this race will be very intimidating for them and not a good intro to the year!  Racers who aren't current with VARA will be kicked out of the race at the deadline - so get current!  This race fills up fast!

Please click HERE to read the "U12 and U10 101" attachment for LOTS of information about the program including training and race schedules (always subject to change - and has since I first sent it!) - this is helpful for new and returning families. There have been several updates for this season each of which is in bold and italics in the packet!   So even if you are an old pro, PLEASE read :)! If you have any questions after reading, don't hesitate to be in touch.

OMARA has launched a new website - check it out at: go2omara.com.  You can access the U10 and U12 training and racing schedule (with very basic info) here: https://www.go2omara.com/alpine (scroll to the bottom of the page to find the calendars).  You can also access a copy of this email under the Updates section on the right hand side of this page: https://www.go2omara.com/u10u12-alpine

Important Reminder on US Ski and Snowboard and VARA memberships:  In order to race, every U12 or U10 must be a current USSS and VARA member.  If you have not registered your child for these memberships, please do so ASAP.  Both can be done online at https://usskiandsnowboard.org/membership and vara.org, respectively.  More info on these memberships is found in the attachment.  IMPORTANT: For USSS choose, Alpine Competitor U12 and under, NOT General Member - this is not valid for competition.  Also your athlete's club should be Okemo Mountain Ski Club or Competition Center....not Okemo Mountain School, unless they are enrolled for 2018-2019.  If you think you have done both PLEASE double check!!  Every year I have to chase families down to get this done - let's break that streak :)!

That's all for now!  Both new and old parents are reminded to read all communication carefully.  If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to email me.

Thanks and Think SNOW!!
